The four wings of the National Gallery house an extensive collection of Western European paintings. Founded in 1824, the Gallery has been in its current location since construction was completed in 1838. Artwork is arranged chronologically beginning with the Sainsbury Wing, in its own building, and then crossing over into the main building where the West, North and East Wings are located. Over 2,000 paintings done by major artists from 1260 to 1900 are displayed.Walk up the steps in the Sainsbury Wing after picking up a guidebook and a floor plan pointing out the location of highlighted paintings. Rooms are numbered and clearly labeled. Expect to find paintings by artists including Leonardo da Vinci, van Eyck, Botticelli and Bellini in this wing. Paintings are not cluttered together in any of the rooms and do not detract from each other.A walkway crosses over to the main building on this level, where you'll find the masterpieces of artists including El Greco, Michelangelo, Rembrandt, Rubens, Goya, Monet, Van Gogh, and many more. Although all are subtly decorated, each wing has a distinct décor and style.....
