| It's easy to see why The Bahamas are such a popular year-round vacation destination. For visitors from the United States, the temperate climate, relaxed atmosphere and welcoming residents make traveling here very appealing. Dress on the islands is casual, resort attire, although you should check for dress codes at fine dining restaurants and clubs. Some require men to wear jackets. Shorts may not be accepted everywhere and bathing suits should be covered up when away from pools or beaches. The islands give visitors a sense of being far from home, yet with some of the same conveniences of traveling in the United States. Bahamians speak English, U.S. currency is accepted and the same voltage is used as in the U.S. Dialing to and from The Bahamas is a direct call (the prefix is 242). The Islands of the Bahamas are just a short flight from both central and eastern states. U.S. citizens are required to bring proof of citizenship in the form of a valid passport (or expired within the past five years) or two forms of identification, like a driver's license and a birth certificate. Many restaurants and hotels will add a 15 percent service charge for food and beverage checks. Otherwise tipping is similar to the United States - 15 percent. Tip porters $1 per bag, and taxi drivers 15 percent. |
