New Providence is the number one destination in The Bahamas. Its capital city is Nassau - a place most visitors hit, connected to Paradise Island (another hot vacation spot) by two bridges. Most of the action is on the northeast side of the island. There are more residents living on New Providence than the rest of The Bahamas combined.Explore New Providence's three forts for a glimpse of Bahamian history. Fort Fincastle is perched at the highest point on the island, 200 feet above sea level. Climb the 126-foot water tower for an incredible view. Fort Montagu overlooks Montagu Bay and is the oldest of the three forts on New Providence, built in 1741. Fort Charlotte, just outside of Nassau, is complete with a drawbridge, moat and ramparts. If it's natural attractions you're interested in, visit Potter's Cay underneath the Paradise Bridge for a taste of conch, pulled out of its shell and served fresh from one of the stands. Or, sample some conch salad and gin and coconut water from a stand at Arawak Cay. Watch it prepared while you wait and enjoy the warm island breeze.March on over to the Ardastra Gardens and Zoo, through lush foliage, past exotic animals to the Zoo's start attraction, flamingos who will show you how it's done (marching, that is) at 11:00 a.m., 2:00 p.m. and 4:00 p.m. daily.
